ITEM: The San Francisco Chronicle for March 10 quotes Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) on federal efforts to improve automobile fuel efficiency: "I support updating CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards to 36 miles per gallon by 2015," he says in the AP story. "Fuel efficiency can be significantly improved through better use of technology, without limiting vehicle choice, without harming safety and without injury to the industry."
BETWEEN THE LINES: Objective studies of fuel regulations paint a different picture than does John Kerry. CAFE legislation proposed by Senators Kerry and John McCain would destroy 450,000 jobs, says one estimate. Tougher requirements (though less than what Kerry proposes) would boost the average price of vehicles by hundreds of dollars, costing consumers an additional $2.4 billion and the auto industry another $1.2 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
