Most polls about the Iraq war show a decline in optimism from the immediate postwar period. This is a familiar reaction. Still, a solid majority in one poll (60 percent) continues to say that the United States did the right thing in taking action there. In another poll, however, less than a majority (48 percent) now believe that the war was worth fighting, considering the costs and benefits. Most Americans continue to say that the U.S. military effort is going well in Iraq.

On six occasions since July 2003, NBC News/Wall Street Journal pollsters have asked Americans how long our troops should stay in Iraq. On each occasion, a majority has chosen the response "as long as necessary to complete the process, even if it takes as long as five years." Around 20 percent want to withdraw our troops now of as soon as possible. A solid majority believe that the war has contributed to the long-term security of the United States.
