Who said green couldn't be fun?
With the nationwide fall introduction of Ford's Partial Zero Emission Vehicle Focus, consumers can feel better about the nastiness spewing from their tailpipes without having to give up that peppy-small-car fun.
In fact, the PZEV 2.3-liter Duratec I4, borrowed from the Mazda 6, cranks out 15 more hp and 14 more lb-ft of torque than the 2.0-liter Zetec that sits at the heart of the Focus lineup.
With 145 maximum hp at 5750 rpm and 149 lb-ft of torque at 4250 rpm, the PZEV Focus is a spirited little ride, pulling off the line with significantly more grunt than the 2.0-liter.
On a recent drive, we found the PZEV Focus more responsive in all situations, from off the line to full revs. Even the heaviest version, the automatic-equipped station wagon, now has enough muscle to move down the road with some semblance of authority.
We not only appreciated the added torque, but especially liked how wide the torque band seemed to stretch, with grunt on tap anywhere on the tach. Peak torque in the PZEV comes on slightly earlier than in the 2.0-liter as well, topping out at 4250 rpm vs. 4500 rpm. The Zetec car feels wheezy in ...
