Indy repaved
Indianapolis Motor Speed-way officials said the 2.5- mile oval will be repaved after this year's Brickyard 400. The oval was last repaved in fall 1995. The 2004 repaving will include the warm-up lanes and pit lane, which were built in 1993 and 1994, respectively. The Speedway's 2.605-mile road course, which was built in 1999, will not be repaved. According to Kevin Forbes, IMS director of engineering and construction, 36,500 tons of asphalt will be laid in two or three layers. The nine-degree banking in the turns will stay the same. Preliminary work is scheduled to begin Aug. 9 and should be completed by mid- to late October.
Junior docked
Nextel Cup driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. was penalized with a loss of 25 points, a $10,000 fine and probation until June 1 for his actions during the Bristol race (AW, April 5). Earnhardt was penalized for intentionally causing a caution during the race. Earnhardt was in violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 12-4-N (any driver who, in the judgment of NASCAR officials, intentionally causes or attempts to cause a caution condition by stopping or spinning out or any other action) of the NASCAR rule book. Junior admitted over his radio and in interviews after the race that he spun the car on purpose to cause the yellow. The penalty also extends to the team: Dale Earnhardt Inc. loses 25 owner points for the actions of its driver.
