Byline: BOB GRITZINGER
Forty years ago Lee Iacocca's baby, the Ford Mustang, premiered to rave reviews at the New York auto show. To commemorate the debut that sparked the pony-car revolution, Ford gallops into the Big Apple on the back of its 440-hp GT-R concept, the latest stallion built on the next-generation Mustang platform.
You'll find more on the GT-R on our website, autoweek.com, and in our cover story in the April 19 issue. For now, we'll stay focused on all the other cars making their first appearances at the New York show. The show is open to the public April 9-18 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
So what's to see in NYC? For starters, Mercedes-Benz shreds the luxury roadster envelope with the world debut of the 2005 SL65 AMG, powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 producing 604 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. SL65 joins the similarly powered CL65 AMG coupe in U.S. dealerships in late summer.
Jaguar is showing its entire XJ sedan lineup for 2005, with special attention to the long-wheelbase XJ Super Eight Concept that demonstrates how luxurious life can be in a rear seat equipped with more multimedia options than your living room.
Acura's prototype RL foreshadows what we can expect in the next-generation 2005 RL luxury sports sedan due this fall, including a 300-hp V6 (still no V8?) and all-wheel drive.
