In December of 2002, Gary Catalano passed away after a long illness. He was among Australia's finest poets, in the old sense of "fine" as exquisite, witty and perfect. There was no one quite like him or his poems:; his brilliance and refined sensibility put him in a class by himself. Both a literary and an art critic (he reviewed art for the Age and published major books of art criticism), he is perhaps best remembered for his remarkable poems, especially his prose poems.
