2004 APR 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Health officials are recommending that West Virginia children suspend the use of the third and fourth doses of the vaccine Prevnar because of a shortage of the drug.
However, children with increased risk of severe disease, such as sickle cell anemia or immune system disorders, should continue to receive the full regimen of four doses.
The vaccine is designed to prevent serious diseases such as meningitis and certain blood infections. It is not usually recommended for children over age 2.
