Volkswagen's answer to Japanese rally sedans has finally arrived. But readers say the VW R32 will succeed not because of its performance, but for its practicality and refinement.

While it does not have the track performance of its competitors, the R32's smooth look and hatchback practicality make it more appealing.

Stephen Zlato, Johnstown, Pa.

The Subaru's build quality will trounce the VW. It will be a tie between the R32 and the Mitsubishi Evo for the time-in-service award, especially with their aggressive young drivers.

Michael R. Marshall, Vienna, Va.

The R32 doesn't stand up to the rally stars; it stands apart. The greater sophistication and refinement make the VW more of a triathlete than a sprinter.

Christopher Guido, Far Hills, N.J.
