SAN DIEGO -- Information from epidemiology might be useful in preventing congenital cytomegalovirus infections, Dr. Gary S. Marshall suggested at a conference sponsored by the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society.

Young women from poorer backgrounds and women of color are much more likely to become infected with cytomegalovirus (CMV) at an earlier age than are wealthier white women.

If those women could be encouraged to delay pregnancy just a few years from when many get pregnant now--in their early or middle 20s--this could produce a tremendous reduction in cases of congenital CMV infection, Dr. Marshall, a professor of pediatrics at the University of …
