Rocky the Rooster and Ginger the chicken in the 2000 movie "Chicken Run" would be horrified at the efficiency of Sanderson Farms Inc..
In the claymation film, which takes place in 1950s England, the two set out on a daring escape from a Yorkshire chicken farm. They succeed in their bid for freedom, cheating fate of two pot pies.
Had they been at a Sanderson Farms' processing plant, the outcome would have been different. There, the chickens don't live to tell about it.
Last fiscal year the company processed 271 million chickens, or 1.4 billion dressed pounds. It processed an additional 13.7 million pounds of poultry products.
Based on average weekly processing statistics for last year, Sanderson Farms is the sixth largest processor of dressed chickens in the U.S.
The company's top competitors include Tyson Foods, Pilgrim's Pride and a couple of privately held firms: Gold Kist and Perdue Farms.
