Byline: DONNA HOWELL
When it came to grand vision, William Pickering was all action.
Pickering wanted to explore space. But he knew it took more than dreams to actually get planetary exploration off the ground.
So he pushed NASA, reminding policy-makers that they held mankind's future in their hands. He lobbied legislators to fund space exploration. He prodded employees to come to him with their ideas. And he built the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory into a key player in the space race.
"Everyone thought of him as "Mr. JPL,' " said Charles Elachi, the lab's current director.
Pickering also was known as "Rocket Man."
"He was really the intellectual leader for the nation's planetary exploration," said Elachi. "He was there at the foundation of it."
