Nissan leads U.S. vehicle sales
The automaker posted a 30% gain in U.S. sales in March, setting a record with 90,494 cars and trucks. Ford posted a 3% gain in sales, breaking a five-month losing streak. The No. 2 U.S. automaker's brisk truck and SUV sales offset weak car sales. GM, the world's largest automaker, saw sales climb 6.3%. Toyota reported its U.S. sales rose 5.5%, while DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler sales dipped 2%.
RETAIL
Wal-Mart, retailers ratings drop
Merrill Lynch lowered its investment rating on Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree Store, Family Dollar Stores, Neiman Marcus Group and Target from buy to neutral on concerns that sales growth would slow in the second half of '04. Retailers have had strong sales in Q1, thanks to holiday gift certificates and income tax refunds. The ratings news sent all the stocks down, except Family Dollar, which closed up.
