Ivan Blume owns the Quality Canines pet shop in Brooklyn, New York. He specializes in selling and training purebred dogs. Shortly after 8 p.m. on December 9, 2003, Michael Live and Hector Perez rang the store's front doorbell. Believing them to be customers, Blume allowed them in, after which the duo pulled guns and announced a robbery.
Live took Blume to the back of the store while Perez tried to bind a teenage employee, Daniel Bonder, with duct tape. The youth resisted, and during the ensuing scuffle Perez's weapon discharged, though the bullet did not strike either combatant.
Live, however, was momentarily distracted by the gunshot. Blume grabbed him and the two began struggling for control of Live's 9mm pistol. Live was also carrying a .38-caliber firearm. Blume gained control of the .38-caliber handgun and shot Live. Blume then ran to the front of the store and shot Perez, who was still grappling with Bonder.
Both thugs were dead by the time police arrived. Bonder sustained a minor hand ...
