At around 8 p.m. on November 18, 2003, an elderly couple were at home in North St. Louis County, Missouri, when an intruder broke into the house through a basement window. The interloper, Jerrold Cain, first encountered the wife in the basement.

Cain forced the woman upstairs and held four-inch shears to her throat while demanding money from her husband. The homeowner told Cain that he had money in his wallet, but that the wallet was in a bedroom.
