DELRAY BEACH, FLA. -- Don't blink. The rapid pace of change at Office Depot has seen the company appoint a new head merchant, reshuffle its senior management team and acquire 124 former Kids "R" Us stores--all within a 10-day period earlier this month.
The moves are components of Office Depot's plan to restore sales growth at its North American retail operations after four years of negative same-store sales. Chairman and ceo Bruce Nelson vowed last month that retail results would improve during the first quarter and accelerate throughout the year, and so far they have. He confirmed on March 12 that as of that date, same-store sales were positive for the first quarter due to end March 27.
