The United States backs using constitutional mechanisms to resolve Taiwan's political crisis, a spokesman for the de facto American embassy on the island said yesterday.
"This is Taiwan's internal affair," said David Miller, an assistant information officer at the American Institute of Taiwan.
He said the institute supported the use of constitutional mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of any doubt about the election outcome.
The institute's director, Doug Paal, met President Chen Shui-bian and opposition leader Lien Chan on Sunday.
Su Chi, a senior aide to Mr Lien, said the Kuomintang chairman explained to Mr Paal why the opposition could not accept the election result and that it also wanted Taiwan to remain stable.
