In "Pro & Con: Should physicians conduct spiritual histories of their patients?" Dr. Harold G. Koenig and Richard P. Sloan, Ph.D., missed an important reason why spiritual histories are important (Oct. 15, 2003, p. 8).
Jehovah's Witnesses accept nearly all forms of medical care except blood transfusions. This is important to know when treating such patients for any surgical condition, cancer, or bleeding disorder. These conditions are not necessarily end-of-life situations, which Dr. Sloan said are the only appropriate time to delve into a patient's religious beliefs. Christian Scientists refuse vaccinations, some Catholics will refuse an abortion under any circumstances, and certain Orthodox Jews have objections to organ transplantation.
