At around 4 p.m. on September 16, 2003, a woman in North Las Vegas, Nevada, had just stepped out of the shower and was getting dressed when a man suddenly crashed through the ceiling. The single mother of three, whose children were not home at the time, immediately ran to her bedroom and grabbed a gun. She then fired several shots at the intruder, one of which struck him in the neck. (She had bought the weapon a few months earlier, after her apartment was burglarized.)
The mortally wounded intruder, Felipe Starks, ran to his neighboring apartment, where police were already waiting for him. He was wanted for sundry burglaries and a parole violation, and plainclothes ...
