At around 4 p.m. on September 16, 2003, a woman in North Las Vegas, Nevada, had just stepped out of the shower and was getting dressed when a man suddenly crashed through the ceiling. The single mother of three, whose children were not home at the time, immediately ran to her bedroom and grabbed a gun. She then fired several shots at the intruder, one of which struck him in the neck. (She had bought the weapon a few months earlier, after her apartment was burglarized.)
