Women using hot tubs during early pregnancy carry a higher risk for miscarriage, according to a recently released study.
The 1996-98 study involved 1,063 pregnant women from the San Francisco area and found that those who used hot tubs or jetted baths were twice as likely to have miscarriages as women who did not.
The women at risk were mostly in their 30s and Caucasian, said one of the study's authors, Dr. De-Kun Li, an epidemiologist at the Kaiser Permanente Research Institute in Oakland, Calif.
High body temperatures are risky for fetuses because they can't sweat, said Li. Previous studies, using animals, showed that high body temperatures increased the number of miscarriages and birth defects.
