Designer doings
We heard there might be some major churning in the automotive design world in and around the Geneva show (AW, Feb. 2), but no one expected this. General Motors European design leader Martin Smith is leaving for a similar position as executive director of design at Ford of Europe. Smith was one of a handful of candidates who lost out to Ed Welburn in the sweepstakes to replace Wayne Cherry as vice president of GM design Oct. 1.
Promptly following Ford's announcement of Smith's appointment is this: Smith's replacement as chief designer for Opel/Vauxhall in Europe is Bryan Nesbitt, the PT Cruiser designer whom GM lured away from Chrysler in 2001. Nesbitt had been in charge of exterior designs for GM's unibody vehicles.
Maser adds GranSport
Maserati buyers will have a third model to choose this summer when the GranSport joins the Coupe and Spyder in the Italian company's lineup. The GranSport, debuting in Geneva, uses the 4.2-liter V8 of its sibling cars but receives an extra 10 horses, giving it 400 hp.
