A cat will save Mercury
If customers are going to notice Mercury's revival, the division needs to do it with its signature nameplate, the Cougar. It should be based on the new Mustang, sharing the same powertrain but with independent rear suspension. By using Mustang mechanicals, the Cougar could also accept most of the 'Stang's aftermarket parts. And instead of going retro like the Mustang, use the styling cues of the sporty Mercury Messenger concept car and mix in traces of past Cougars.

Bean counter has his say
Regarding the Feb. 16 issue's "Euro-pains'' story and the letter by Don Lee: Both items referred to bean counters deciding the fate of proposed vehicles. It's time for me to stand up for us. As a bean counter by profession and car lover by birth, it's not bean counters who make these decisions. As consumers and investors, we all do. It's up to us to buy good products we crave (or at least say we do), and invest in those manufacturers that build what we like. In the end it's the investors and consumers' fault that bean counters have to pay so much attention to cost on these decisions.
Bean counters only do what we can to keep stockholders and related markets happy. And a lot of us are car crazy too, including Porsche Cars of North America retired president Fred Schwab.
If we all put our money where our mouth is, most dream cars would be built, with resulting economies of scale and more ...
