President Chen Shui-bian's re-election campaign appears to have been gathering momentum since his camp's success in staging a high-profile mass rally last Saturday, but if he gets a decisive boost and wins the March 20 poll, it will not be because of a majority of voters recognizing the job he has performed during his four years in office. Nor would it be because they believe that he will truly be able to make life better for them during a new term.
Rather, it will be due to most people identifying with Chen over his steadfast position on the two crucial issues of national identity and Beijing relations. He insists that Taiwan is an independent sovereign country, and refuses to accept Beijing's claim that this island is part of China.
