Singleton pregnancies due to assisted conception have significantly worse perinatal outcomes than other singleton pregnancies, reported Dr. Frans M. Helmerhorst of University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands, and his colleagues.
In a review of 25 studies, including 17 with matched controls and 8 with nonmatched controls, the risk of preterm birth (before 37 weeks' gestation) among singletons was twice as high for babies born after assisted conception as for those conceived naturally (11.4% vs. 6.1%).
The risk for preterm birth among twins conceived via assisted conception was not significantly different from the risk among twins conceived naturally, however, in fact, twin pregnancies due to assisted conception had a 40% lower perinatal mortality rate than twin pregnancies conceived naturally (BMJ [Epub ahead of print], January 2004.
