There is another new open-wheel series about to begin, if reports out of Dubai can be believed: Organizers of a new series called A1 Grand Prix series, a Dubai-based motorsport venture, claim the series will be launched in Dubai on March 30. The series will use cars built by Lola in the United Kingdom, powered by 3.5-liter Langford engines. In late January, series officials ordered 30 identical Lolas.
The cars will have no electronic controls, the idea being to emphasize driver ability. The championship will have between nine and 18 races. Organizers said the series will offer $2 million in prize money, enough for teams to break even if they finish fifth in every race. The organizers said they are finalizing agreements with circuits in various countries and are putting together a television package.
Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum of the ruling royal family of Dubai is financially backing the series.
A true world series
The promoter of the European Touring Car Championship and the FIA GT Championship has opened negotiations with venues in Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay in a bid to gain FIA world status for both series in 2005. The organizers want 10 races in Europe, and the schedule could grow to 12 events on three continents.
