Viewpoint Corp. is hitching its fortunes to Yahoo Inc.
The struggling software company is developing a new search toolbar for Yahoo users -- a move it hopes will fuel a comeback. Yahoo, meanwhile, sees the new toolbar as a way to lure advertisers and users away from rivals.
A toolbar is a strip of software that sits on a Web browser. It helps consumers quickly find information in search engines.
Most search companies including Yahoo, Google Inc. and Ask Jeeves Inc. have their own toolbars. Microsoft Corp. developed a toolbar for its MSN portal late last year.
But Viewpoint says it can improve on the concept. Its advantage, the company says, is graphics.
For example, a word search on most search engines brings up a list of text results. The Viewpoint toolbar instead generates small thumbnail images of Web sites.
