Sepracor soars on insomnia drug

The drug firm got conditional FDA approval for Estorra. The U.S. will give final clearance after Sepracor meets undisclosed conditions, but it will not require more drug testing, thus speeding final approval. Sepracor plans to roll out the fast-acting anti-insomnia drug by mid-'04. It will compete against Sanofi's Ambien and King's Sonata for the $1.5 bil market, which has seen 25% growth the past two years. Shares shot up 57% to 44.30.

AaiPharma discloses sales probe

The drugmaker plunged 36% to 9.77 after it disclosed "sales abnormalities" in '03 for its asthma drug Brethine and pain treatment Darvocet. The company said it has launched a full inquiry. It withdrew its Q1 and '04 forecasts and warned it may adjust previously reported '03 results.

** AaiPharma is selling its Aquasol nutritional products and multivitamin infusion product lines to Australia's Mayne Group for about $100 mil in cash.
