Drugstore Chain Up For Sale

Retailer J.C. Penney Co. said it plans to sell its Eckerd drugstore chain. Eckerd, classified by Penney as "discontinued operations," ranks as the country's fourth-largest drugstore chain, behind Walgreen Co., CVS Corp. and Rite Aid Corp.

Genzyme Announces Purchase

Shares of Genzyme Corp. fell early Friday after it announced plans to buy Ilex Oncology Inc. in a bid to add cancer drugs to its line of medicines. Genzyme said it would pay about $1 billion, or $26 a share in stock. The deal is expected to close by midyear and add to Genzyme's earnings in 2006.
