Another weak sentiment showing
The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index fell to 94.4 in Feb. from 103.8 in Jan, which itself was the highest in over three years. The drop echoes those in the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index and in the IBD-TIPP Index of Economic Optimism.
NY business climate improving
The National Association of Purchasing Managers' index of business conditions in the New York metro area rose to 267.2 in Feb. from 257.3 in Jan. That's its best reading since Sept. '01 and is its 6th straight gain after 9 declines. The index's current conditions component eased to 69.8 from 79.4 in Jan.
** The ECRI's leading index rose to a record 133.7 in the week ended Feb. 20 from 132.9 a week earlier.
** French producer prices rose 0.3% in Jan. from Dec. and 0.2% from Jan. '03. The gains stemmed from higher energy costs.
