2004 MAR 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Clinical trial finds that the combination of gemcitabine, epirubicin and paclitaxel (GET) has acceptable toxicity and is active in patients with metastatic breast cancer.
"In this phase II, multicenter trial, patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) were treated with GET. The primary objective of this study was to determine the tolerability and activity in terms of complete response (CR) and overall response rate of the GET combination in this patient population," scientists in Italy report.
"Patients with no prior treatment for MBC, and at least one bidimensionally measurable lesion received gemcitabine 1000 mg m[superscript]-2 intravenously (i.v.) over 30 min on days 1 and 4, followed by epirubicin i.v. at 90 mg m[superscript]-2 on day 1, and paclitaxel 175 mg m[superscript]-2 over 3 h on day 1, every 21 days, up to 8 courses," wrote F. Cappuzzo and colleagues, University of Bologna.
"From May 1999 to June 2000, 48 patients were enrolled from seven Italian institutions. A total of 297 chemotherapy courses were administered with a median of six cycles patient[superscript]-1 (range 1-8). Seven patients (15%) obtained CR and 27 patients (56%) had partial response, for an overall response rate of 71% (95%; CI: ...
