2004 MAR 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Patients who are CHEK2* 1100delC mutation carriers should undergo prolonged surveillance because of increased risk of developing another breast tumor.
According to recent research published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, "We detected a significant excess risk for CHEK2* 1100delC mutation carriers to develop a contralateral breast tumor, OR = 6.5 (95% CI 1.5 - 28.8, p= .005)."
"The highest percentage of mutation carriers was detected among those bilateral breast cancer patients who had received radiation treatment for their first breast tumor," wrote A. Broeks and colleagues, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Department of Pathology.
