Despite less than ideal weather, sales were hot in Arizona at the 33rd Barrett-Jackson Auction Scottsdale, with a record-breaking 98 percent sales rate.
There were no star cars, such as last year's $1.1 million Jaguar XKSS, but plenty of celebrities came to sell and buy automobiles. Tim Allen spent $78,300 for a 1956 Ford F-100 pickup powered by a blown Hemi. A Friday highlight was Survivor host Jeff Probst's story of his first date in the family 1966 Corvette, a 427-cid coupe with 435 hp; the price of the car soared to $62,640. Reggie Jackson, Bob Seger and George Benson were also on hand looking for new rides.
There was another Jackson taking part in the show. Michael Jackson's 2001 Bentley was prominently displayed but did not cross the stage, as the bank was keeping a firm grip on the title. Look for the car at an upcoming Barrett-Jackson sale.
While some sports cars did quite well, including a pair of 1955 Mercedes-Benz Gullwings that went for $394,200 and $367,200, it was the classic muscle cars and hot rods ...
