AutoWeek's Fast Five: Oliver Stefani The leader of the Volkswagen Concept R exterior design team, Oliver Stefani, discussed the new face of VW at the 11th Annual AutoWeek Design Forum sponsored by Johnson Controls during the Detroit auto show in January: AW: What are some essential qualities in a car designer?

STEFANI: Flexibility and creativity. Every day you are confronted with problems and you should not fall in love too much with the design, because it might change over a while.

AW: What inspires you?

STEFANI: I'm basically interested in anything that goes on in art and fashion, architecture, cars-of course, cars. Everything that has to do with design, with art, and also with giving answers to the question of what's the future. The film industry, for instance, influences an awful lot.

AW: How is your experience of design different now from when you were starting out?
