The American Speed Association brags that "We build champions.'' It could add to that motto... "who then move on to other series.''
Among the former champions who grew rich and famous somewhere else: four-timer Mark Martin, two-timer Dick Trickle and one-timers Rusty Wallace, Johnny Benson, Tony Raines and Johnny Sauter. The late Alan Kulwicki was an ASA regular before going to NASCAR, as was Ted Musgrave. Why, even Darrell Waltrip, Jimmie Johnson, Scott Wimmer and Jimmy Spencer won ASA races before moving to Cup.
But in all fairness, most ASA stars are happy spending years with the Midwestern-based, short-track circuit. Kevin Cywinski, the '97 and '03 champion, will return to chase another title. Likewise, '98 and '00 champion Gary St. Amant, '99 champion Tim Sauter, '95 champion Bryan Reffner, and Butch Miller, last year's runner-up and '87, '88 and '94 champion.
