Is McRae back?
Former World Rally champion Colin McRae could make a return to world rallying as soon as next month, after a second lackluster performance in a row has thrown Belgian Freddy Loix's position at the Peugeot team into question. In Sweden (page 48) Loix was a massive five minutes off the pace of his team leader, Marcus Gronholm, when he blew an engine. In Monte Carlo last month he finished the opening round of the season seven minutes behind Gronholm. Loix has never won a rally and the last of his two career second places was six years ago in Spain. "Freddy has always been employed as third driver,'' said team principal Corrado Provera, who jettisoned his second-string driver Harri Rovanpera for underachievement. With Loix's performance threatening Peugeot's ability to fight for the manufacturers' championship, Provera is under pressure to find a top driver. McRae is the only top-line driver available to fill that role. But despite two meetings with McRae's father and manager Jimmy, Provera will not confirm the possibility of the Scot joining the team as soon as Mexico next month. "Any plans we do have are private,'' he said. McRae was unavailable for comment.

Tony Stewart will contest two more rounds of this year's Grand American Sports Car Series in the car with which he came within minutes of winning the Daytona 24 Hour (AW, Feb. 9). The 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup champion has signed to drive in the Daytona and Watkins Glen rounds that run with the Nextel Cup races.
