Putin's Muslim strategy.(Insider Report)
With the possible exception of Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq, no government has been responsible for more Muslim deaths over the past quarter-century than Moscow's. Between 1979 and 1988, over a million Afghans were mowed down by the invading Red Army. In addition, tens of thousands of Chechens have died in Moscow's brutal war against the breakaway Muslim province. Thus there are many who will be surprised to learn that Vladimir Putin's Russia has applied for membership in the 57-member Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
"Russian Muslims are an inseparable, full-fledged, and active part of the multiethnic and multi-denominational nation of Russia," "former" KGB officer Putin declared in an address at last November's OIC summit in Malaysia. "I am convinced that our actions within the framework of the OIC can today become an element of a just and secure world."
The Agence France Press (AFP) reported on January 2 that "Russia's ties with the Islamic world have improved" as a result of Russia's application for membership in the OIC.
