Recent cases of computer hacking and electronic voting error should give pause to the push to change from paper ballots to electronic voting machines. First, as reported on December 29 by various news services, a computer hacker succeeded in breaching the security of one of the major companies developing security for electronic voting technology. VoteHere Inc. of Bellevue, Washington, confirmed reports that an electronic intruder had broken into its internal computer network and accessed internal documents and may have copied sensitive "source code" blueprints for software. The break-in was an embarrassing blow to VoteHere, but if such a breach happened in a real election we could be facing much more serious consequences than embarrassment. The FBI and the Secret Service are reportedly investigating the incident.
