Novartis has submitted regulatory applications to a range of authorities for a new indication for its Diovan (valsartan) to improve survival and reduce cardiovascular events in patients at high risk after surviving a heart attack.

Applications have been filed by the Swiss drug major in the USA, Sweden (which will act as the reference member state for the European Union's Mutual Recognition Procedure), the UK and Switzerland. Further filings are planned to other regulatory authorities shortly, including France and Australia, as well as Asian and Latin American countries, noted the company.
