2004 FEB 11 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The 14-3-3 protein is a key molecule in parasites as it is in other organisms.
"The 14-3-3 proteins represent a family of widely expressed approximately 30-kDa acidic proteins acting as spontaneously forming, phosphoserine-threonine-binding dimers. This protein family has a crucial role in eukaryotic cell signaling events that are involved in controlling progress through the cell cycle, in transcriptional alterations in response to environmental stimuli and in programmed cell death. The 14-3-3 proteins have now been isolated and characterized in parasitic organisms," scientists writing in the journal Trends in Parasitology report.
"In Schistosoma species and Echinococcus species, the biological functions of several 14-3-3 protein isoforms have been extensively studied," stated Maria del Mar Siles-Lucas at the University of Salamanca in Spain and Bruno Gottstein at the University of Bern in Switzerland.
