2004 FEB 11 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Thailand activists on January 17, 2004 urged AIDS sufferers and their supporters worldwide to use a legal victory against a U.S. pharmaceuticals giant in their fight for cheaper and more available drugs against the deadly disease.
After a two-year court battle, Bristol-Myers Squibb has reportedly agreed to give up its patent for the anti-retroviral drug Videx EC, which is used to treat HIV. The move should allow the Thai government and other drug companies to produce generic versions of the drug at much lower costs.
"I hope this victory will boost their morale everywhere in the world and encourage (AIDS victims and activists) to keep fighting for fairness," said Nimit Tienudum, director of the AIDS Access Foundation, one of three groups which took the company to court.
