Bridge Run regular is contender in Olympic trials Saturday.

Eddy Hellebuyck, an elite runner who has competed in the Cooper River Bridge Run the past three years, will be among the top marathoners competing in Saturday's U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Birmingham, Ala.

After last year's Bridge Run, I got to know Hellebuyck when he joined a group of runners for a few post-race brews downtown on Saturday night. For being one of the best runners in the country, Hellebuyck was friendly, unassuming and just fun to be around.

At 43, the Belgium native is the oldest competitor in the field competing in this year's trials, which will determine the three U.S. marathoners to compete in the Olympics in Athens on Aug. 29.

Despite his age, the diminutive Hellebuyck - he's 5-4 and 105 pounds - has the fourth-fastest qualifying …
