When the average non-racer thinks of the land speed record, the cars that pop into mind are probably Craig Breed- love's Spirit of America and maybe Richard Noble's Thrust SSR (driven by Andy Green), jet-powered monsters aiming for the unlimited record. But land speed race cars come in all shapes and sizes, from big jet cars like Thrust down to little 50-cc squealers. A new exhibit at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, Speed: The World's Fastest Cars, covers the wider spectrum of the sport.
There is a historic jet car on hand, one of Art Arfons' Green Monsters from the '60s (shown above). That is a rare sight, and might in itself make it worth dropping into the museum for a visit.
The rest are wheel-driven, as they say on the salt. A standout is the rarely seen, monstrously proportioned, fully restored orange and blue Mormon Meteor III, direct from Utah. You may have seen it at the Pebble Beach concours a few years ago.
