Now that the Pontiac Solstice is out of the barn, its mere existence begs the question: What else can we expect from General Motors' new Kappa rear-wheel-drive sports car architecture?
GM is already making it clear that the highly adaptable Kappa will spawn a string of sporty models, on a chassis that can be shortened, lengthened, widened or raised, and built as a convertible or with a fixed roof, depending on the need. Kappa-based concepts that accompanied the production Solstice at the Detroit auto show included the 2+2 hatchback Chevrolet Nomad and the sporty styled 2+2 Saturn Curve coupe.
The two concepts show the powertrain flexibility possible with Kappa and GM's global four-cylinder Ecotec engine. Nomad sports a 250-hp turbocharged 2.2-liter Ecotec mated to a five-speed Tapshift-controlled automatic, while the Curve's 230-hp supercharged version of the same engine is linked to a Getrag five-speed manual. The production Solstice, though the weak sister of the trio at 170 hp, could easily be fitted with any of the powertrains shown.
