NYSE stocks closed an indecisive session with mild gains Monday even as tech shares lost ground. The Dow industrials added 0.1% on lighter trade, the benchmark S&P 500 0.4%. The small-cap S&P 600 finished flat.
Keithley Instruments bolted 1.52 to 25.57 on 2 1/2 times normal volume. The maker of electrical measurement gear marked its highest point since June 2001. The firm posted first-quarter profit of 7 cents a share Friday, topping views by 5 cents. It lost 3 cents a share a year earlier. CEO Joseph Keithley said order levels were the highest in 2 1/2 years.
Thomas Nelson added 1.32 to a 52-week high of 26.31. The publisher of Christian materials has posted gains the last four weeks and 11 of the last 13. The firm grew profit 64% to 250% the past three quarters, but sales growth lags at 2% to 20%. Return on equity of 12.3% in fiscal 2003 marked at least a nine-year high.
