Humana profits from hiking fees
The health insurer made 41 cents a share, reversing a year-ago loss of a penny a share and beating views by a penny. Humana, a major provider of U.S. Medicare and military health plans, boosted its insurance premiums. However, shares fell 2% to 22.96 on concerns that the company couldn't build up private-sector accounts, which have fatter margins; the '04 outlook of $1.60-$1.65 a share also disappointed.
Boston Scientific taps global sales
The medical equipment maker earned 17 cents a share, 6% higher than last year and a penny over views. Net sales rose 15% to $939 mil, as international demand rose for its drug-coated stents. U.S. sales fell 4%. The company expects to win U.S. marketing approval for its Taxus device and launch it in the U.S. this quarter, joining Johnson & Johnson. Shares rose 1%.
