The Nasdaq logged a quiet session Friday to wrap up its fourth straight month of gains. The tech composite shed 0.1% on lighter trade. The big-cap Nasdaq 100 dipped 0.2%. For January, the Nasdaq added 3.1%.
Yellow Roadway crashed 5.01, or 13.8%, to 31.40 on seven times normal volume. The recently merged trucking group reported disappointing volumes at its Roadway unit and guided down early 2004 earnings views. The firm reiterated its full-year '04 earnings target of $2.70-$3.30 a share, but said first-quarter profit would be 25-35 cents. First Call analysts see 35 cents.
Gilead Sciences gapped down 5.88 to 54.81, slicing through its 50-day and 200-day support lines. More than 20 million shares changed hands vs. its 50-day average of 3.3 million. The biotech late Thursday forecast sales of anti-HIV drug Viread that fell below analysts' expectations. It also said competition will hurt sales of anti-fungal drug AmBisome. Merrill Lynch cut the stock to neutral from buy.
