Anthem Posts Strong Q4 Earnings

The Indianapolis-based health insurer's quarterly profit climbed 28% to $1.43, excluding one-time gains. Sales rose 8% to $4.22 bil. Anthem is buying WellPoint in a $16.4 bil deal to create the country's largest managed care firm. It's expected to close in mid-2004.

New Heart Disease Marker Found

A German study in the latest Journal of the American Medical Association says doctors can measure patients' risk of heart attack or death via a simple blood test that detects levels of a so-called placental growth-factor protein in the blood. This "marker" protein contributes to artery inflammation.
