2004 FEB 5 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Chiron Corporation (CHIR) announced that the company has decided to expand its program to evaluate the efficacy of Proleukin interleukin-2 (IL-2, aldesleukin) and rituximab in patients with low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
As part of the expansion of the program, Chiron will increase enrollment in its current phase II study in order to complete the trial. To date, the study has evaluated 29 patients. The company expects to complete enrollment in 2004.
"We have some provocative preliminary data in a patient population that has traditionally been refractory to the standard-of-care treatment. Therefore, we have decided to continue enrollment to better understand and quantify this signal," said Stephen Dilly, senior vice president and head of BioPharmaceuticals Development, Chiron BioPharmaceuticals. "The use of translational medicine techniques in this trial will be instrumental in identifying the sub-population that could benefit preferentially from IL-2 and mAb treatment. The expansion of our IL-2 program underscores Chiron's commitment to aggressively pursuing promising early data."
