SANTA FE Gov. Bill Richardson today torpedoed the prospect for legislative efforts to allow Albuquerque's West Side to secede.

"The damage that would result from splitting Albuquerque along the Rio Grande would be tremendous," Richardson said. "While I am not allowing the subject into this year's short session, I am not closing the door on the concept."

Richardson said he sympathized with West Siders who saw a road bonds issue go down in defeat last year. The bond issue would have allowed for construction of roads through parts of Petroglyphs National Monument.
