BOSTON -- Don't rely on routine liver function tests to identify liver disease in morbidly obese patients, Dr. Patricia Latham warned at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
Of 155 morbidly obese patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and wedge liver biopsy during 2002, 20 were found to have nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and of those, 15--including 1 with cirrhosis--had entirely normal liver enzyme levels, said Dr. Latham of George Washington University, Washington.
