A collage is an art composition of materials or objects that are usually glued or fixed to a surface. It may be created abstractly, with interesting textures, color, and patterns.

African American artist Romare Bearden (1912-1988) combined photo-montage, patterned paper, and swatches of his own drawings to form collages that tell a story. Making a collage is a very creative experience. Finding just the right snippets is perhaps the greatest challenge and half the fun. Here's how to get started.

You need:

* pictures (see directions)

* firm piece of cardboard, foamcore, or artist's canvas board

* paint (your choice of color)
